NAME: Clarissa Fairchild aka Clary Fray CANON: Shadowhunters ( tv series ) AGE: 18 CANON POINT: end of season 1 ( just after her mom wakes up ) BACKGROUND:
| CLARY WIKIA | SEASON 1 WIKIA PERSONALITY:
Shadowhunters have a culture that breeds a certain type of person capable of doing a very rough job. This training begins at a young age and makes children into adults sooner than they should have to. There are things about this training that make it a necessity, but there are aspects of the training that can create a narrowed view of the world. This typically leads Shadowhunters to live on a different side of reality that keeps them separate from what the real world is. This doesn't make them naive about humans, but it does create a barrier.
While Clary's upbringing lacks the training Shadowhunters get to do the difficult task given to them by the Archangel Raziel, it does place her in a rare position in life. As such, Clary is a girl born of two worlds.
Having grown up whole and safe, Clary's been shielded from the harsh reality of demons. She's been able to lead a mundane life, and one that appears to have been pretty wholesome at that. While she did only have her mother, there was also Dot, a close family friend and employee of her mom's, and Luke, yet another close friend of Jocelyn's who maybe could have been a little closer. Clary grew up with her human friends, Simon Lewis being one of her strongest friends all her life. She went to a normal school, and clearly set goals of becoming an artist as she applied to the Boston Academy of Art ( and was even accepted ).
With this kind of upbringing and this support group of family and friends, Clary was instilled with a sense of loyalty. Family and friends mean a great deal to her, as they've always supported her, and she would do the same for them. That kind of support can be empowering, as well. It's what drives her to do for her friends and family, what gives her the confidence to pursue her dreams with the Boston Academy of Art. It's clear that there's a strength in Clary that's fueled by this support and love.
When Jocelyn is taking, it's an earth shattering moment for Clary in many different ways. The first of which is that Clary's life seems to have been one of relative ease. This disruption to her life is unexpected and thus jarring. But the loss of her mother is an even greater pain that turns into a driving force in Clary's life. With Dot having gone missing as well and Luke seeming to be working against Clary and her mother, losing her mom means the last real shred of her normal life and that love and support is gone entirely.
Despite the easier upbringing, Clary still feels the empowerment of that support in her life. Having previously driven her to pursue her dreams, it now becomes what fuels her to push on after such a dramatic shift in her life. Suddenly demons are real, and she's a Shadowhunter, and all of this is second next to her mother being missing. So while the knowledge of having been lied to all her life about who she is is upsetting, and the whole new world is jarring, the fact remains that Jocelyn is what matters most to Clary. Thus, Clary pushes on past what's difficult to do what must be done. This turns into one of Clary's greatest strengths. It helps her cope, and it pushes her to be stronger. Not that she wasn't already strong in spirit, but she grows further in both physicality and as a person.
While this drive can be an asset, it can also be blinding. It tends to leave Clary a little single-minded. This shows that once Clary has her mind set to a thing, she can be hard to remove from it until that thing has been achieved. Not everything is going to be a trigger for that drive, typically it would take something near earth-shattering to create such a drive in her, but even smaller needs can become a bit consuming for the girl to lesser extents. She may be able to focus without letting her drive take her off another task if it's a lesser drive, but when fulfilling that goal it can also lead her to be intense about it.
Clary is not always the easiest person to get along with because of this. She's stubborn to a fault, and she can sometimes take unnecessary risks when she's stubborn. She would never ask anyone to follow her into dangerous territory when she makes a stubborn decision, others do often rush in to help her which can be dangerous. It's a struggle for her to sometimes give up being stubborn, but it's not impossible, either. She can be convinced, so long as there's not given proof that whatever she's doing will negatively impact her goals.
And yet again, being stubborn can turn into a positive when it comes to loyalty. The thing about Clary is that she's trusting of other people. Maybe too trusting sometimes, as she believes a little too much of what she's told ( see: believing that Luke, who nearly raised her, would betray her ). Despite that, though, it can lead to her forming fast relationships with people. It's almost hard not to be sucked in by her, and just as easy for her to forge a new relationship she'd go to the ends of the world for. Sometimes to the point of risking offense to others for her goals. In her life, family trumps friends, and friends trump alliances. Though if she can make all three work, she will always look for a way to do so.
Being so trusting means that Clary is also very honest in her own right. She speaks her mind, sometimes too loudly, but she doesn't hide things from those she trusts. Even big secrets, like being a Shadowhunter and refusing to hide it from Simon who was a mundane. She has a strong belief in being honest and clear with others, but she can be forgiving if something is hidden and later revealed. So long as the secret doesn't hurt others, of course.
This all leads to Clary being a different breed of Shadowhunter than typically raised in the Clave. She's more keen to listen to Downworlders, more eager to forge alliances with them and gain their trust, and she's more critical of the Covenant between Shadowhunters and Downworlders than those raised in the Clave tend to be. She doesn't see the world as being so black and white, and she really doesn't see what's so bad about Downworlders. Having not been raised with that rhetoric, she's more open to talking with Downworlders and finding peace that equally benefits all sides. There's no reason to harm others outright, after all, and she'd rather see a new peace made in the Shadowhunter world. Even if she's one of few with that train of thought.
Clary is a kind girl. She trusts easily; she's open to others. She's stubborn and driven, both to her benefit and her detriment. She's quick to forgive, and quick to anger if those she loves are wronged. She's someone who can be fierce in her convictions. All in all, she's just a girl trying to do right by the world and by the people she loves. ABILITIES/POWERS:
SHADOWHUNTER ⇢ Shadowhunters, also called Nephilim, are descended from humans who drank the blood of the Archangel Raziel mixed with the blood of humans. This granted them, and their descendants, natural abilities associated with the angelic blood in their bodies. Clary is descended from Shadowhunters, and thus, despite her lack of formal training, still has these innate abilities within her. These abilities can also be honed with training, knowledge, and time.
PHYSIOLOGY : Despite the lack of formal training through Clary's formative years, Clary is still naturally gifted with Nephilim physiology due to her angelic blood. This grants Clary three abilities, on a basic level, that distinguish her from typical humans: the first is Sight; the second is the ability to mark herself with angelic runes; and the third is the ability to use angelic items.
SIGHT : While there is a rune to help focus and strengthen Sight in a Shadowhunter, Clary still has a natural ability to use Sight without even intending to do so. Sight is what allows Shadowhunters to see more than a human would. This includes demons and all associated with the Shadow World, but also each other despite glamour runes. While some glamour runes can still deceive the Sight, others can hide Shadowhunters and their world from view while being completely seen by others of their kind. This is shown when she can see a demon that attacks her at a park at a young age. Throughout Clary's youth, this ability was suppressed when her memories were taken from her by Magnus Bane. At eighteen, this ability began to resurface, leading Clary to seeing Shadowhunters fighting demons when she should not have.
This ability will have a Permissions post applied to it.
ANGELIC RUNES : Runes are marks given to the Shadowhunters by the Angel Raziel that allow them to be more enhanced than a normal human might be. Some runes are permanent runes and some are temporary. A Shadowhunters uses a stele, like a pen almost, to burn the rune onto their skin. Each mark grants a different ability. Some grant better sight in the dark, some grant the ability to start fires. A list of known runes can be found here. Runes cannot be used on someone with angelic blood, which could lead to turning someone into a Forsaken as the power would be too much for their body and drive them to insanity. This is why this ability sets the Nephilim apart from mundanes. Runes can be applied to one's self or by another who can wield a stele to a Shadowhunter.
ANGELIC ITEMS : Angelic items are items that only Shadowhunters can use. These items typically do not work for other beings. Weapons are an example of such items. Shadowhunters use Seraph blades, whips, etc., that are only activated when a Shadowhunter wills it. These weapons are capable of killing humans and demons. Clary tends to prefer a blade that is like a short sword. Non-weapons include steles, which are what Shadowhunters use to draw their runes. Another such item is witchlight, a stone that can be made to glow bright.
SPECIAL ABILITY : Not every Shadowhunter has a unique ability, but in some select Shadowhunters, their angelic blood grants them an extra ability that others might not have. These abilities are able to be passed down from one generation to the next. Clary's mother, Jocelyn, passed one such ability to Clary. This ability is the ability to press an item into paper and turn it into a drawing/painting itself. She can also reverse this ability and pull the item out of the artwork. This only applies to an item put into a picture through magical means, not any items that were drawn and were always drawn/painted.
COMBAT TRAINING : Most Shadowhunters train from a young age. Clary was not so lucky. Clary has begun training when time allows her to at the New York Institute. While she has progressed and is able to use a blade, she's nowhere near the level of her Shadowhunter peers. Still, she is shown to be able to fight and defend herself at her current point in canon.
ARTISTIC ⇢ Completely separate from her Shadowhunter capabilities, Clary is also shown to be a talented artist. At the start of canon, she was accepted to the Brooklyn Academy of Art. INVENTORY:

Clary is on another planet.
It's a whole other planet.
There's times when everything that's happened to her doesn't really connect somewhere deep in the logical part of her brain that says all of this is crazy. It's probably the same part of her brain that always knew demons were out there, even when her memories and experiences taught her otherwise. Some part of her capable of comprehending the unknown, because what was normal about being a Shadowhunter, after all?
Then there were the times when all of that seems to have completely abandoned her, leaving her standing at the precipice of insanity and scrambling to just step back and comprehend that chasm of strange that has engulfed her horizon. This is one of those times.
Clary takes a step deeper into the jungle, her GPS tracking the location she's meant to be traveling to at a faster pace than this. The planet thing she had actually slowly come to terms with, but the concept gets redefined with every crunch of that planet under a heavy booted step. Her breathing is deeper than need be, she's not stretched herself thin for this travel after all, but the breathable air suddenly seems so very heavy. A bead of sweat trickles down her temple.
She stops.
It's just above, just within reach.
Clary swallows hard, fights back the dread that bubbles up in a near smile of elation as the two war within her, and pulls back the foliage to step into the rather large nest of unknown creatures before her.
This place was supposed to be friendly, that's what the report said, despite being a nest. Whatever wildlife inhabited this planet, it felt safe. Even from invaders it seemed. Clary's dread loses it's war with elation, and that smile comes forth against her will. After all, before her is a very creature with very inquisitive eyes.
The bird-like alien extends itself in greeting to the human that's stumbled into it's home. What use are terms like Shadowhunter and mundane to an alien? Clary reaches out a hand, slow and she hopes assuring. There's no way of knowing if this creature will respond to her kindly, after all the reports are incomplete, but that's why she's here. They need more data, and she's the one willing to take that chance in the hopes of doing so peacefully.
True to initial reports, though, the creature closes it's eyes and presses it's beak to Clary's hand. Her breathing stops, halted by the beast with a beak nearly as large as her body. Yet again, she feels small in a universe that's just too big. Carefully, she reaches up and gently takes a loose feather she's spotted. The bird seems to watch her curiously, but doesn't move otherwise. Finally, Clary retracts her hand from the beak and gives a polite nod.
"Thank you," she says kindly, turning to walk away from the bird. She does so a little quickly almost, not knowing what her exposed back will invite.
It's as she takes a step to leave that she's nearly floored. An overwhelming feeling of warmth and kindness spreads through her, taking over her senses and forcing Clary to look back at the almost smiling bird. Clary can't help but smile widely back, before slipping back into the jungle and on to her next mystery. | |
